Nick has just returned from prison and, besides drinking beer and occasionally visiting the gym, nothing seems to interest him. He has a younger brother whose wife has died and who is caring for a young son. It’s sad to see how easily the boy reveals secrets that his father is trying to keep from him. The brothers meet at their mother’s funeral and the lives of all the characters in the film suddenly connect there. Director Vinterberg tells the story of two outsiders from a Copenhagen suburb who live from day to day, trying to survive their hopeless situation; they are just trying to “keep their heads above water”, which metaphorically refers to the name of the film, Submarino. This raw Nordic drama is filled with impressive performances and was filmed with mindful consciousness and authenticity, reinforcing the emotional impact of the film.
