This second feature film by British director and scriptwriter Andrea Arnold has received awards at film festivals worldwide. The film captures the reality of life for 15-year old Mia, with the vigorous use of a handheld camera. We are left with the impression of someone whose premature lessons in life have lead to disillusionment. Mia lives with a younger sister and her mother who must certainly have had Mia as a teenager. Her attitude is defined by a huge middle finger aimed at everyone around. The household changes when the mother’s new boyfriend Connor joins the family. He doesn’t look like a hoodlum with Wayne Rooney’s kind of charm. He is sweet, sexy and caring. For the first time, Mia experiences desire, sexual tension and pseudo respect for her stepfather.
