Sofia lives alone with her young son. Her mother hires Mariama, a young woman from Guinea, to help Sofia around the house but the women struggle to find a common language. Sofia has been running from her own personal problems and Mariama is trying to escape her community, which insists on carrying out cultural traditions, including the most primitive ones. As the family starts to prepare Mariama’s little sister Bobo for the traditional ritual of female circumcision, the two women meet in an attempt to save the little girl from the barbaric act. Bobo, directed by the talented Portuguese director Ines Oliveira, looks at the serious topic of the unequal status of women in different cultures.
